Timeless beauty: architecture of the Hotel Rickmers Insulaner
In the 1960 season, Erni and H. P. Rickmers opened the Hotel Insulaner as the successor to the previous family business, the Empress of India. The building was constructed in the typical style of the Heligoland reconstruction, which is characterised by the Bauhaus philosophy and the design form of ‘Nordic simplicity’.
In recognition of the special character and quality of the building, practically the entire local development is now a listed building and an outstanding example of 1950s urban planning and the democratic ideas of Bauhaus.
At Hotel Rickmers Insulaner, we have worked with great dedication and at great expense to preserve the character and original image of the time while also creating a modern hotel with all the functionalities for today's demands.

Hidden places in the garden park
Over the past few decades, we have continuously expanded the small hotel garden, so that today you can enjoy a large garden park, unique on the island, with various retreats and sunbathing areas.
The terraced garden park offers numerous places where you can retreat and relax. The different levels of the park invite you to enjoy nature and let your soul dangle.
Some of the hidden places allow you to enjoy the breathtaking view over the North Sea in peace and quiet.
Historic fortress tunnel as a special experience
The historic fortress tunnel in the garden park offers a special experience. It provides information about the strategic context of the island swap between England and Germany and the consequences for the small island. The tunnel is not only a fascinating piece of history, but also an invitation to learn more about the cultural diversity of Heligoland.
Cosy lounge
The lounge is located on the ground floor of our building and offers a view of the adjacent garden park. It is available to all hotel guests and is a retreat for quiet moments.
Here you have the opportunity to
- enjoy a drink,
- read in peace
- or exchange ideas with other guests in a pleasant atmosphere.
Whether it's to round off an eventful day or for a brief moment of peace and quiet – the lounge is always open for you.
